The People Democratic Party, Rivers state chapter has reacted to comments by the state governor, Chibuike Amaechi that he is not duty bound to obey any court judgment that is against him on Obio/Akpor local government council.
The party which was reacting on the statement made on Rhythm Fm live programme, ‘Funky Four’ on Friday says Amaechi’s latest statement has vindicated it, as the Party has continuously and tirelessly complained against Gov Amaechi’s persistent acts of disobedience to statutory institutions and show of impunity in governance.
The Party’s statement issued by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman, says Gov Amaechi has shown enough prove of the fact that he is not a respecter of the law, even when he is a product of the rule of law and justice.
The PDP also takes a swipe at the Governor’s comment that he can wake up any moment and dissolve any Local Government Council, saying such is an act of arrogance and dictatorship, and nothing short of an abuse of the rights and privileges enjoyed by an occupant of that office, and that what that means is that the Governor (Amaechi) dictates the fates of all Local Councils in the State against the provisions of the law.
It is in the light of the above that the Party calls on the electorate and entire Rivers people to rise up against the abuse of their rights and acts of impunity by officials of the Rivers State Government.
The PDP also urges the Rivers State Judiciary not to be swayed, discouraged or intimidated by Gov Amaechi’s comments, believing that he cannot do otherwise, than to comply with the rule of law when it becomes necessary for him to do so.
“This therefore, to us, brings the uprightness and courage of the court and the Judges to test, as it is our hope and belief that if our judiciary maintains its independence and integrity, such position, like the Amaechi’s, will not hold sway”, the party emphasizes.
