Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has tasked mathematics teachers in the country to formulate methods that would help students develop greater interest in the subject.
Uduaghan made the call while declaring open the 50th Annual Conference/ Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Asaba on Tuesday.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama, SAN, urged MAN to come up with teaching methods and techniques that would make mathematics more learner friendly.
Uduaghan noted, ” the gap between the technologically advanced nations and the rest of the world is increasing daily. We know that any technological breakthrough always centres on the effective mastery of mathematics and other basic sciences.”
He observed, “Mathematics as a subject is important to almost every field of study and our daily lives. It is little wonder, therefore, that even in the arts and humanities, mathematics is considered a requirement, especially in admission processes.
“This conference should no doubt boost the commitment towards training and retraining of mathematics and mathematical science teachers.
“We should be able to evolve better and more effective ways of making both the teacher and learner to like the subject in a way that demystifies the minds of the learners.”
The Governor informed that his administration has continue to support all activities geared towards improving teaching and learning in all institutions.
“We have embarked on the provision of science and technical equipment, furniture, laboratory kits among others to schools training and retraining teachers, including the massive renovation and construction of infrastructure across the state,” he said.
