The questioning of the embattled leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Chidi Lloyd, by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has unsettled the camp of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as some members of the team saddled with the responsibility of strategizing on how counter the alleged bid of the presidency to remove Amaechi from office are now afraid of being targeted by the commission.
The team, which the commissioner for Information and Communications Mrs. Ibim Semenitari is a major player, according to a source privy to the working of the team, has realized that nobody is immune from EFCC’s searchlight, and stand being investigated for alleged financial impropriety.
Before Lloyd was quizzed by the EFCC, the source added that four commissioners were under the raider of the anti graft agency for possible questioning, and that one of them, who has been occupying the same ministry since Amaechi became governor, had been invited in the past for alleged graft related offence.
He added that the national and international media attack launched against President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Dame Goodluck Jonathan in the past few weeks had not gone down well with some influential persons occupying national positions.
The source also added that the cry over the removal of security details of Amaechi, and the reduced strength of security around the Governor was issued as a threat before the Governors Forum election.
“They openly told the Governor not to contest the election, but he refused, saying he had the backing of other governors. Still they warned him that the security around him will be reduced if he contests, but he did not take the threat seriously,” he said.
The EFCC had stormed Rivers State on Monday and started quizzing public office holders over a yet-to-be mentioned financial impropriety.
Some of the commissioners who have executed projects running into billions of naira are said to be clearing their offices removing important documents that could implicate them.
