Eight serving governors have called on Governor Chibuike Amaechi to hold discussion with President Goodluck Jonathan on the crisis in Rivers State.
The governors of Lagos, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo and Ogun, as well as the governors of Imo, Nassarawa, and Zamfara stated this Thursday afternoon inside Government House in Port Harcourt in company of Amaechi, who received them at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.
Peace, they noted through Kayode Fayemi that peace remains important for democracy to succeed, calling on Amaechi to brief President Goodluck Jonathan as the country’s chief security officer. They said that Amaechi had brifed them on the situation in the state, but felt there was need for him to discuss the issue with Jonathan based on the position he occupies in the country.
The Governors also appealed to the President to act on the crisis.
Fayemi said: “We resolved and we advised him to meet Mr. President to discuss with him so that we can find a way out of the crisis, which is avoidable. We believe that by his meeting with Mr. President, actually will find a way to resolve this crisis in Rivers State.”
He also said: “We believe that Mr. President, being our leader, we are all President’s men, we are all President’s Governors, he is our leader, and we feel that he actually occupies a very critical position that necessitates his wielding his moral authority in ensuring that peace reigns here.”
The governors also called the Inspector General of Police to take some steps in the interest of peace and security.
“The IGP is very well placed to help take the necessary steps to restore the confidence of the government, of the governor and the people in the police in Rivers State. And every step that is created to making that possible are steps we want the IGP to take,” he said.
The visiting governors are Raji Babatunde Fashola of (Lagos, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Rauf Aregbesola of Osun and, Ajimobi (Oyo), and Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun). and the governors of Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar (Zamfara) and Umaru Tanko Almakura of Nassarawa and Rochas Okorocha of Imo, who were represented by their deputies.
