A Port Harcourt High Court presided over by Hon Justice Adolphus Enebeli has given the police the go ahead to investigate and prosecute the former Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly Hon Otelema Amachree to know if he had raised a false alarm when he alleged that there was a plot to assassinate Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
He made the allegation before the brawl in the state House of Assembly occurred, in which a lawmaker was seriously injured.
The speaker had gone to court to stop the police from arresting and investigating him for making the allegation.
He was unable to substantiate the allegation, when he was asked to do so by the police, just as he shunned police invitation.
The court presided by Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli in its judgment Monday [today] dismissed the case brought by the former Speaker seeking to restrain the police from arresting and investigating him.
Reacting to the judgment, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State in a statement issued by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on Media to the state chairman, Hon Felix Obuah said it was a strong statement against false alarmists.
The statement stressed that the ruling has also strengthened the confidence of the people in the Nigerian judiciary as the last hope of the common man, and cannot be for the highest bidder or under the apron string of an inordinately ambitious state governor.
Urging the police to be thorough in its investigation, Mr Needam said that the allegation of a plot to kill the Governor of the state is so weighty and cannot just be wished away as mere political rhetoric.
The party urged the speaker to submit himself for interrogation to avoid being declared wanted like Hon. Chidi Lloyd.
The PDP leadership further urged the Inspector General of Police to prefer the relevant charges against Mr Otelemaba Amachree without delay.
