The Government of Nasarawa state in a holistic step to boast food production in the state has procured 450,000 metric tonnes of assorted fertilizer this wet season,The state Governor Umaru Tank Al-Makura stated this at this years cropping season at Lafia today.
The Governor aver that the 150 trailers of fertilizer will go along way in boasting food production as well reducing the rising spate of unemployment in the state, describing agriculture as the mainstay of the state.
“Agriculture gives everybody the leverage to earn living, calling on people of the state to embrace farming, Governor Al-Makura identified the over dependence on oil wealth to the upshot of unemployment in the country”.
He buttress that the state Government is to sell the fertilizer to end users at the rate of N3,500 per bag, adding that N540m was spend for the procurement, He ascribed the early distribution of assorted fertilizer and improved variety of seedlings to meet up to target of the state Government to yield a bumper harvest this rainy season.
The state commissioner for Agriculture and water resource, Samuel Meshi said the introduction of farmers friendly policies was meant to inject new farming techniques ,He however added that seventy five (75) tonnes of NPK and seventy five tonnes of Urea were procured to farmers in the state.
Stating that the concerted effort of the state Government was meant to mobilize farmers for better yield as well keep them abreast of the new method of farming.
