The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed surprise at the extent of achievements so far recorded by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP administration.

The party leadership said though it is aware that the administration has achieved so much in all the critical sectors of the economy, the scorecards so far presented to it by cabinet ministers in the on-going ministerial briefings have shown that the government has “actually achieved far more than have been widely acknowledged.”

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement yesterday said the leadership of the party and indeed Nigerians are happy with the administration but added that the ministries should strengthen their publicity department to enlighten Nigerians more on their activities.

“The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is indeed very surprised at the extent of achievements recorded so far by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP administration.

“We are aware that the administration has recorded tremendous successes in executing its mandate in the critical sectors of the economy, but the scorecards presented by ministers in the on-going PDP ministerial briefing have shown that this administration have actually achieved more than have been widely acknowledged”, the statement said.

The party noted that presentations by ministers who have so far appeared before it, including the Ministers of Works, Water Resources, Mines and Steel, Science and Technology and that of National Planning, show that their activities and successes were under-publicized.

It therefore urged ministers to beef up their publicity departments to give adequate publicity to their activities and achievements.

In the Works sector, the party said it is impressed by the massive projects executed by the President Jonathan-led PDP administration under the Operation Safe Passage  initiative and Zero Pothole Programme which led to the dualization, rehabilitation and maintenance of major trunk roads and hundreds of other major roads projects spread across the country, the recent flag-off of the dualization of the Lokoja-Benin-Auchi road, the imminent award of the Second Niger Bridge project and the repair of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos among others.

Also in the water resources sector, the party expressed surprise at the massive infrastructural projects executed by the current administration. The party listed the increase in urban and rural water provision, on-going construction of 20 dams with the capacity to provide  additional 298 megawatts of electricity to the national grid as well as the generation of 3 million jobs by 2015. This is in addition to massive irrigation projects that have contributed in the boosting of food production in the country.

In the mines and steel sector, the party said it was also surprised at the extent of research and collaborations in the exploitation of solid minerals following the generation of geoscience data including two databases, 51 geological maps and analysis of 5,900 rock samples, which led to the increase in investment flow in the non-oil sector.

The PDP therefore urged President Jonathan to discountenance “ill-founded” criticisms by the opposition which it said are directly meant to distract the PDP-led government from delivering on its mandate.

The party also restated that it will continue to focus on issues and the welfare of Nigerians in line with its manifesto and Transformation Agenda of the present administration.

It however, lambasted the opposition for their “anti-democratic disposition” which it said were “evident in the manipulation of local council elections in opposition controlled states such as Lagos and Edo, where the polls were characterized by outright rigging and electoral malpractices using their overbearing control of their State Independent Electoral Commissions”.

“If they were in charge of the Federal Government, it is obvious that they would have since taken over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and cripple the nation’s democracy”, it said.
