About 30 people were reportedly killed, scores injured and 20 houses burnt on Tuesday in a fresh violence that rocked the fragile peace in troubled Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, a witness has told PREMIUM TIMES.

Survivors of the three communities that were affected have called for urgent security intervention in the area.

The police authorities in the state confirmed the incident but declined to comment on the number of casualties.

The newly posted Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau, Felicia Anslem, said the counter terrorist police have been deployed to the area to arrest the situation and maintain law and order.

Mr. Anslem called for the cooperation of members of the public to enable the police discharge their duties and bring the situation under control.

He said no arrest has been made in connection with the Wase mayhem, but asked residents to go about their legitimate duties without fears of molestation as the police were trailing that suspects.

The violence in Wase led people to desert Southern Plateau as persons travelling to Shendam; Lafia, the Nassarawa State Capital; and parts of Taraba State; from Langtang North and Kanam s councils had to retreat to Central Plateau for safety.

Wase Local Government has witnessed several attacks on its communities. Residents say the military task force keeping peace in the area are complicit in the attacks which left scores of their kinsmen dead.

PEMIUM TIMES had reported claims by some Wase residents that some members of the host community belonging to a particular ethnic group were the perpetrators of the violence.
