Ahead of the election of apex Igbo group Ohanaeze, information available to News Express indicates that the new President General may have already been selected by power brokers.
The election is scheduled for today in Enugu, the political capital of Igbo land, with former Deputy President General, Dr. Gary Igariwe, and Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Botswana, Aja Nwachukwu, squaring off for the office of President General, which has been zoned to Ebonyi State
An authoritative source in Ohanaeze however told News Express that the presidential election is a formality as they already know the man to lead the Pan-Igbo organisation for the next two years.
“Dr. Igariwe, deputy to Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, is our new leader,” the source said. “An electoral committee was set up in October last year but nobody came up to contest against him. Anybody who comes up now is only wasting his time.”
The source disclosed that Igariwe has been running Ohanaeze in acting capacity in the past few months following the stepping aside of Ambassador Uwechue upon the expiration of his extended tenure.
Apart from the office of President General, other positions, including that of Secretary General, are expected to be filled during the election.
