Imo state government has directed the Directors of Administration and
General Services (DAGs) to take over the affairs of the 27 local
government areas in the state.
In a statement signed by Prof. Anthony Anwuka, Secretary to the State
Government, Gov. Owelle Rochas Okorocha directed that DAGs take over
the affairs of the councils in the interim while arrangements are
being perfected to conduct council elections in accordance with
section 7 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
as amended.
The statement reads “Upon the expiration of the tenure of office of
all the elected Local Government Chairmen and Councilors on the 8th of
August 2012 in accordance with the provisions of section 23(1) of the
Local Government Administration Law No. 15 of 2000 as amended by
section 3(a) of Local Government Administration (Amendment) Law No. 15
of 2009, which pegged the tenure of the aforesaid Local Government
elected officials to two(2) years certain, commencing from the date
they were sworn into office, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of
Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha hereby directs the Directors of
Administration and General Services to take over the administration of
the affairs of the Local Governments in the Interim, while
arrangements are to begin as soon as possible to conduct elections in
accordance with section 7 of the constitution of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria 1999 as amended. ”
Recall that an Owerri High Court presided by Justice Ngozi Opara on
Thursday vacated the exparte order obtained by the former Council
Chairmen seeking for tenure elongation beyond August 8.
