A 56 year old man, Chiafor Emmanuel Ndubuisi who sold 5 plots of his family land in exchange for illicit drugs is counting his losses as he is being interrogated by anti-narcotic investigators with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos. The auto-parts dealer sold the land and invested the proceeds in the purchase of illicit drugs. He ingested 97 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine and was arrested during the screening of British Airways passengers to London at the weekend.
The total weight of the ingested drug is 1.990 kg with an estimated street value of 15 million naira. It is also the highest quantity ingested since January 2011. The suspect’s regret is obvious as his words capture it succinctly. “I am totally confused. I was deceived into the drug trade with a promise of making five times the money I invested. My intention was to start my business in a big way. Now, I have lost everything. I now understand why they lured me into giving them 5 million naira as my contribution to the deal” Chiafor lamented.
Preliminary investigation carried out by the Agency revealed that the suspect attended Asa Road Primary School Aba. He however could not further his education due to financial challenge. He later learnt how to repair vehicles for 4 years. After a stint as an automobile technician, he started selling auto parts. It was greed that eventually pushed him into selling his family land to start his business in a big way. All that is now a fantasy as Chiafor who hails from Arungwa in Isialangwa area of Abia State will appear in court soon. He is married with a child.
