The Fiidi Council Ward Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, Igbu Terhemen, has died in what the party is describing as a violent attack by unknown assailants.

What Happened

According to accounts from a friend of the deceased and party sources, Terhemen left his residence Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area of Makurdi but never returned home. Concerned family and friends began searching for him, and he was discovered around 2 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, in an almost unconscious state in a bush near his residence, close to the NNPC Depot along the Makurdi–Otukpo Road. He was unable to speak or communicate and died before receiving medical attention.

Party sources allege the attackers tied him with ropes and injected him with a substance suspected to be poisonous, citing a needle-like injury found on his body, before abandoning him in the bush. Notably, his mobile phone was found intact on his person, which several reports say suggests robbery was not the motive.

Party Reaction

The Benue State chapter of the NDC condemned the killing. State Chairman Ohini Ojegbe described it as a “broad-daylight evil” and called on security agencies to urgently investigate and bring those responsible to justice. In a statement, State Publicity Secretary Agile Bem described Terhemen as a committed and dedicated party member whose contributions to the NDC’s growth in Benue State would be greatly missed, and the party extended condolences to his family and the Fiidi community.

Police Response

When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Peter Aondongu said the command had not yet received an official report on the incident. As of this report, there is no official police confirmation establishing the precise cause of death or whether it resulted from a criminal attack — meaning the specific details of the alleged assault, including the poisoning claim, currently rest on party and family accounts rather than a confirmed investigative finding.

247ureports.com will update this story as the Benue State Police Command responds and investigations proceed.
