AKURE, NIGERIA — A midnight raid by a criminal syndicate was bloodily disrupted after operatives of the Ondo State Police Command neutralized two suspected kidnappers during a fierce gun battle in the Ilu-Abo axis, along the Akure-Owo Expressway.
The tactical operation, executed in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, successfully foiled the abduction of a local businessman and led to the recovery of an arsenal of weapons, face masks, and operational tools.
The Midnight Siege at Ilu-Abo
The incident began at approximately 3:30 a.m. when a gang of about seven masked gunmen violently invaded the premises of Olaiya Block Industry, located directly beside Ilu-Abo High School. According to security briefs, the armed men breached the facility and aggressively demanded to see the owner of the business with the clear intent of abducting him for ransom.
However, the syndicate’s operational timeline was cut short after residents managed to alert authorities. Operatives attached to the Federal Highway Patrol Unit at Ilu-Abo swiftly mobilized and intercepted the gang mid-operation.
Fierce Exchange of Gunfire
Upon realizing they had been cornered by law enforcement, the gunmen opened fire on the arriving patrol team. The highway patrol team immediately took tactical positions, engaging the suspects in a prolonged and intense exchange of gunfire.
During the heavy shootout, two of the suspected kidnappers were shot dead by superior police fire. Overwhelmed by the tactical response, the remaining five members of the syndicate abandoned their mission and fled into the surrounding dark bushes, with several believed to have sustained severe bullet wounds.
“Acting swiftly on credible intelligence, the police patrol team mobilized to the scene, where the suspects engaged operatives in a fierce exchange of gunfire,” stated the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh. “During the encounter, two of the suspected kidnappers were neutralized, while the remaining members of the gang escaped into the surrounding bush with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.”
Weapons and ATM Cards Recovered
A thorough forensic sweep of the immediate battleground by the police led to the recovery of several incriminating items abandoned by the fleeing gang.
| Recovered Operational Assets | Description & Legal Context |
| Firearms & Ammunition | One locally fabricated pistol and multiple live cartridges. |
| Communication Gear | Four high-end mobile phones used by the syndicate. |
| Tactical Disguise | Several face masks used to conceal their identities during raids. |
| Financial Instruments | Two ATM cards believed to belong to the gang or their previous victims. |
Hospital Tracking and Ongoing Hunt
The bodies of the two neutralized suspects have been moved and deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure for autopsy and identification. Meanwhile, the state command has officially transferred the case file to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a deeper, discreet investigation into the syndicate’s broader network.
The PPRO issued an urgent appeal to all local residents, community leaders, and particularly healthcare providers and traditional doctors across Ondo State to immediately report any individual found seeking treatment for suspicious bullet wounds. The command reiterated its commitment to keeping the Akure-Owo highway secure, vowing that tactical teams will remain deployed in the surrounding forests until the fleeing, injured suspects are brought to justice.
