A fire outbreak has hit and critically affected a laboratory building at Paul University, Awka, destroying some laboratory equipment and portions of the facility before it was brought under control by firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 22, was successfully contained, with no casualties or injuries recorded.
According to a statement issued by the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, the emergency distress call was received at about 1:10 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters to the university.
The Fire Service said its personnel commenced firefighting operations immediately on arrival at the scene, working swiftly to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings within the institution.
Preliminary findings, according to the statement, indicated that the fire was suspected to have been triggered by a power surge.
The affected structure was identified as a one-storey building housing a chemical and medical laboratory, where laboratory equipment, materials and parts of the building were damaged by the inferno.
Despite the damage, the Fire Service said its personnel successfully contained the fire before it could escalate to adjoining structures, thereby minimising further losses.
The firefighting operation was reportedly concluded at about 3:15 a.m., after the blaze had been completely extinguished and the affected area secured.
While commending the prompt response and professionalism of the firefighters, the Fire Service also appreciated members of the public who assisted during the emergency operation.
The agency further advised residents, institutions and property owners to ensure that electrical installations are properly maintained and protected against power surges to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.
