OWERRI, NIGERIA — Panic gripped the Eziobodo community in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday night after heavily armed gunmen invaded the host community of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).
The unexpected attack threw students, traders, motorists, and local residents into total confusion as heavy gunfire rang out across the university environment, forcing a complete lockdown of the area overnight.
The Invasion and Chaotic Escape
According to eyewitness accounts and viral videos circulating on social media, the attack began unexpectedly during the late evening hours, sending hundreds of people fleeing into nearby bushes and residential hostels for safety.
One viral clip showed a visibly injured male victim covered in blood sitting on a roadside bench, which further heightened anxieties among the student population. A commercial motorcyclist who survived the onslaught narrated how he narrowly escaped a hail of bullets after a stubborn passenger insisted on riding directly into the unfolding combat zone despite early warning signs of unusual militant movements along the road.
Surrounding Environment Desolated
By Thursday morning, the busy streets surrounding the university campus were completely deserted. Fearful residents and students have largely abandoned outdoor activities, locked up commercial shops, and stayed indoors due to the threat of a secondary attack or reprisal operations.
The identity and motives of the armed invaders remain entirely unknown. At the time of filing this report, neither the Imo State Police Command nor the FUTO university management had released an official statement confirming the casualty figures, the number of abductions, or the current security status of the Eziobodo axis.
