ABUJA — Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has unleashed a scathing attack on Channels Television anchor Seun Okinbaloye, following the journalist’s public warning that Nigeria is drifting toward a dangerous one-party system. During a heated media chat in Abuja on Friday, a visibly enraged Wike mocked the veteran broadcaster, suggesting that he had abandoned professional ethics to become a political mouthpiece.
The controversy erupted after a recent edition of Politics Today, where Okinbaloye expressed grave concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to de-recognize the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership could kill off viable opposition. Okinbaloye had noted that if the ADC—seen by many as a last hope for the opposition—is sidelined, the nation’s democratic survival is at risk ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike’s Dismissive Critique
Wike ridiculed the anchor’s position, asserting that Okinbaloye has no right to make definitive declarations about the fate of democracy on national television. The Minister argued that a journalist’s job is strictly to ask questions, not to offer “unsolicited opinions” or “partisan” analysis. He went as far as to compare Okinbaloye unfavourably to international broadcasters, claiming that top-tier global anchors do not engage in such “reckless” commentary.
Nigerians Condemn ‘Tyrannical’ Rhetoric
The Minister’s outburst has triggered a wave of condemnation from the Nigerian masses, who view his comments as a blatant attempt to bully the press into submission. Civil society groups and ordinary citizens have characterized Wike’s rhetoric as a “tyrannical” display of power intended to silence anyone who dares to point out the administration’s crackdown on the opposition.
Critics have pointed to the INEC-ADC leadership dispute as clear evidence of a systemic plan by the Tinubu administration to cripple rival parties. On social media, Nigerians have expressed deep frustration with the current political climate, with many praising Okinbaloye for having the courage to voice the fears of a “choked” democratic system.
Hope Rises Over U.S. and Trump Intervention
In a significant shift, the Nigerian public has overwhelmingly welcomed news that the U.S.-based policy firm, Von Batten-Montague York L.C., is moving to brief the Trump administration and Congress on these developments. There is a palpable sense of relief among the masses, who are now looking toward the United States to intervene and “reengineer” a broken electoral system.
Many Nigerians are expressing happiness and eagerness at the prospect of the Trump administration’s involvement, viewing it as the only way to ensure a fair and transparent 2027 presidential election in the face of what they describe as state-sponsored oppression of the opposition.
