From Mohammed Nasir Shuaibu BAUCHI
The Bauchi State Government’s swift evacuation of 64 students from the University of Jos amid recent violence has been described as a strong demonstration of its commitment to student welfare and emergency response.
The evacuation followed a crisis in Anguwan Rukuba that claimed 27 lives, prompting urgent action after authorities received a distress call from student leaders.
Commissioner for Higher Education and Regional Integration, Hajia Hadiza Abdulkadir Kango, said the government immediately mobilised security agencies and transportation to rescue the stranded students.
“This reflects the priority the administration places on the safety of its citizens, particularly students studying the state,” she said.
President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), UNIJOS Chapter, Comrade James Timothy, described the intervention as unprecedented, noting that previous crises did not attract such rapid response.
He said the action has boosted confidence among prospective students from Bauchi State considering admission into UNIJOS.
Analysts say the move reinforces ongoing government efforts to support education through scholarship schemes and student-focused policies.
The NUBASS leadership also highlighted the role of collaboration between student bodies and government institutions in ensuring timely response during emergencies.
Authorities in Plateau State are continuing efforts to restore peace in affected communities, even as Bauchi officials reaffirm their readiness to protect citizens wherever they reside.
