LAGOS — A brand-new bus covered in “Renewed Hope” stickers has become the centre of a heated online debate after a video surfaced showing members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) gathering to dedicate the vehicle.
In the footage, which went viral on Monday, April 6, 2026, congregants are seen surrounding the white bus on church grounds, praying fervently for its future use. The vehicle, clearly branded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign slogan, was brought to the sanctuary by a lucky beneficiary of a recent government empowerment programme.
Faith Meets Politics
While the dedication of new cars is a standard practice in many Nigerian churches, the sight of political campaign materials inside a place of worship has rubbed some the wrong way. Critics on social media argue that bringing “Renewed Hope” branding into the church is a step too far, especially while many Nigerians are still waiting for the economic relief promised by that very slogan.
“It is one thing to be empowered by the government, but another to turn the church into a campaign ground,” one user commented. “When people are struggling to buy bread, seeing a campaign bus being ‘sanctified’ feels out of touch with the reality on the streets.”
Just a Testimony?
Supporters of the move, however, insist that the focus should be on the individual’s testimony. They argue that the member was simply showing gratitude for a life-changing asset and followed the traditional Christian path of seeking God’s protection for their new property, regardless of whose sticker is on the door.
The RCCG leadership has not yet commented on the video, and it remains unclear if there are official guidelines regarding the display of political branding during such dedications. As the 2027 election cycle begins to simmer, the image of a “Renewed Hope” bus being blessed at the altar serves as a loud reminder of how deeply politics has entered every corner of Nigerian life.
