ABUJA — Peter Obi has issued a stinging indictment of the current administration, describing the United States’ decision to evacuate embassy staff as a “bad omen” that exposes a total collapse of national security.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the former presidential candidate accused the country’s leadership of being “preoccupied with politics” while terrorists systematically dismantle the nation’s safety.
The Cost of Inaction
Obi’s reaction followed a chaotic 24 hours that saw the U.S. Embassy in Abuja shut down visa services and a Brigadier General killed in a coordinated ISWAP attack in Borno. He argued that these events are clear signals of declining international confidence in Nigeria.
“A nation where people cannot live, work, worship, or travel safely cannot progress or attract investment,” Obi stated. He pointed out the irony of Nigeria ranking fourth on the Global Terrorism Index while leaders focus on “schemes” to undermine democracy rather than protecting the lives of the citizens.
The ‘Nero’ Comparison
With the 2027 election cycle already dominating political discourse, Obi didn’t hold back, comparing the current government to the Roman Emperor Nero. He noted that leaders are playing “politics as usual” while frontline troops make the ultimate sacrifice without adequate support.
“Sadly, as Nigeria deteriorates, we as leaders, like Nero, remain preoccupied with politics, forgetting that without security, there is no nation to govern,” he warned.
National Emergency
Obi called for the current security crisis to be treated as a “national emergency,” insisting that the primary duty of any government is the protection of life and property—a mandate he says has been fundamentally neglected.
Despite the grim assessment, he closed his statement with his trademark call for hope, insisting that a “New Nigeria” remains possible if the right leadership priorities are set.
