ENUGU — The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has officially waded into the brewing scandal involving social media personality Blessing Okoro, popularly known as Blessing CEO, confirming that a medical report she paraded as her own was a “clumsy forgery” stolen from a genuine cancer patient.
In a statement that has sent shockwaves through the digital space, the Delta State branch of the NMA revealed that the document Blessing CEO used to claim she was battling stage 4 breast cancer actually belonged to one Miss Deborah Mbara. The medical body noted that the clinical data in the report matched Mbara’s records exactly, but the personal details had been crudely altered to fit the influencer’s narrative.
The Anatomy of a Hoax
The controversy erupted after Blessing CEO launched a high-profile “fight for life” campaign, claiming she was selling off her properties to fund expensive treatments. However, eagle-eyed observers and medical professionals quickly spotted inconsistencies in the “evidence” she provided:
- The Signature Trap: The report carried the name of a prominent doctor based in Asaba, Delta State, but the letterhead had been changed to an address in Enugu. The doctor in question has since denied ever meeting Blessing CEO or signing any document for her.
- Identical Data: When compared side-by-side, the “Blessing” report and the original “Mbara” report showed identical tumor measurements and lab results—a statistical impossibility for two different patients.
- The Mbara Family Speaks: The family of Deborah Mbara has come forward, alleging that the influencer manipulated Deborah into sharing her private medical files under the guise of “helping her seek a second opinion,” only to use the documents to launch a fraudulent fundraiser.
₦13 Million and the “Miscommunication” Defence
As the evidence of forgery mounted, the financial scale of the alleged scam became clear. Blessing CEO admitted to raising over ₦13 million in public donations from sympathetic followers. With the NMA’s confirmation of the forgery, many of these donors have begun a massive online campaign demanding immediate refunds and calling for her arrest.
In a frantic attempt at damage control before her Instagram account was deactivated on April 4, 2026, the influencer tried to walk back her claims, suggesting there had been a “miscommunication” and that she was merely “raising awareness.” The Mbara family has flatly rejected her private apologies, describing her actions as a “vile exploitation of a dying woman’s pain.”
Legal Hammer Looms
Legal experts warn that Blessing CEO is now facing a triple threat of criminal charges. Under Nigerian law, she could face up to 14 years for forgery, 7 years for identity theft, and a staggering 20 years for obtaining money under false pretences (419).
The NMA has urged security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further exploitation of public empathy. “This is not just clout chasing; this is criminal fraud using the sanctity of medical practice as a shield,” a representative of the association stated.
As of Tuesday morning, the Mbara family’s legal team has confirmed that a formal petition has been submitted to the police, signaling that the influencer’s “Renewed Hope” for a quick escape from this scandal may be short-lived.
