KANO, Nigeria – Prominent Kannywood comedian Musa Mai Sana’a has reportedly been the victim of a violent assault in Kano, as public anger over his outspoken support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration boils over.
While social media reports on March 31, 2026, described the actor as being “beaten to a pulp” by an angry mob, local sources confirmed the incident followed a series of heated political rows within the city and the film industry. The assault marks a dangerous escalation in the backlash against celebrities seen as promoting the ruling party amidst severe economic hardship in Northern Nigeria.
A Divided Kannywood
The controversy intensified after Mai Sana’a publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the President, stating that his support for Tinubu is non-negotiable. This triggered an immediate rift with fellow Kannywood stars, most notably Sadiq Sani Sadiq, who recently apologised for his own previous support of the administration, citing worsening insecurity and inflation.
The disagreement highlights a deepening divide in the Hausa film industry as the 2027 election cycle approaches. Many actors are now publicly distancing themselves from pro-government campaigns to avoid the kind of hostility currently being directed at Mai Sana’a.
Outrage Over “Blind Loyalty”
Public sentiment in Kano has turned sharply against the comedian, with critics accusing him of “insensitivity” toward the plight of ordinary Nigerians.
- Economic Relief: Residents point to the skyrocketing price of food and fuel as reasons why celebrity endorsements for the ruling party are being met with open violence.
- Security Concerns: Critics argue that while the comedian claims to be working with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to sensitise the public, the reality on the ground remains one of significant fear and poverty.
Defending the “Renewed Hope” Agenda
Despite the reported physical attack, Mai Sana’a has previously doubled down on his position, asserting his role as a representative tasked with communicating the government’s successes to the grassroots. He has maintained that his support is based on a patriotic belief in the administration’s long-term plan, regardless of the personal risks involved.
As of press time, the Kano State Police Command has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the specific location of the assault or the extent of the comedian’s injuries, though his supporters have called for a swift investigation into the “barbaric” act.
