YENAGOA — An embarrassing breakdown of military discipline occurred in Bayelsa State on Friday as personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Navy engaged in a physical brawl during an official visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video, broke out just as the President was concluding the inauguration of several infrastructure projects, including the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge. What began as a verbal exchange between drivers of a Naval Police vehicle and an Army transport quickly escalated into a violent free-for-all.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a soldier approach the Naval vehicle and punch the driver, sparking a chaotic scene where personnel from both services traded blows in full view of the public and senior officials. The sight of armed men in uniform fighting on the streets caused immediate panic among residents, many of whom fled the area fearing the scuffle would lead to gunfire.

The Nigerian Navy has since confirmed the arrest and detention of the naval personnel involved. Navy spokesperson Captain Abi Folorunso described the clash as an embarrassing breach of military ethics and confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched to identify and punish all those responsible.

This public display of indiscipline has cast a shadow over the presidential visit, which was intended to showcase federal development in the Niger Delta. Critics have been quick to point out that such a blatant failure of inter-agency coordination during a high-profile security operation raises serious concerns about the professional conduct of the nation’s armed forces.
