ABUJA — In a move that has sent shockwaves through the nation’s capital, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda has broken ranks with the ruling APC’s “unity” narrative, openly calling on Nigerians to vote out any leader who fails to perform. The bold declaration, made during a public event over the weekend, has reportedly triggered a wave of “confusion and uncertainty” for the Tinubu administration.

Governor Radda’s comments are being interpreted by many as a direct challenge to the status quo, especially as the 2027 electoral cycle begins to take shape. For a sitting APC governor in the President’s own party to advocate for “voting against” non-performers is seen as a significant crack in the administration’s regional support base.

The “Open Game” Declaration

Speaking with unusual bluntness, Governor Radda emphasized that political power is not a permanent inheritance but a mandate that must be earned through service.

“Politics is an open game, not done in the dark,” the Governor stated. “Anyone that leads the people well, let the people vote him again, and anyone that does not, the people should vote against him.”

He stressed that the ultimate power belongs to the citizens and urged Nigerians to use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a tool for accountability rather than blind loyalty.

Aso Rock on High Alert

While the Presidency has not yet issued an official rebuttal, sources within the villa describe the atmosphere as one of “deep concern.” The timing of Radda’s speech is particularly sensitive because Katsina, the home state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is a critical voting bloc. Radda’s “vote them out” rhetoric aligns with growing complaints in the North over insecurity and the rising cost of living under the current APC government.

This internal APC friction comes just as the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—bolstered by figures like Atiku Abubakar—is gaining traction as a “youth-led” alternative for 2027. By stating that votes should be used to “reward or reject,” Radda is inadvertently piling pressure on the Tinubu administration to ensure that the 2027 polls are transparent, a point that remains a sore spot for the current leadership.

Leadership vs. Loyalty

“Governor Radda is essentially telling his people that their hunger and safety matter more than their party membership,” says one political analyst in Abuja. “In a system built on ‘city boy’ loyalty, this kind of talk is seen as a betrayal, even if it is fundamentally democratic.”

Critics of the Governor, however, are asking if he is ready to apply the same standard to his own administration. While Radda has been praised for his “grassroots development” projects, Katsina remains one of the states most affected by banditry—a failure he recently acknowledged by telling residents they should “take up arms” to defend themselves.

The Road to 2027

As the April 13 voter revalidation deadline approaches, Radda’s speech has emboldened opposition movements. For many Nigerians “pushed to the wall” by economic hardship, the Governor’s words have become a rallying cry. Whether this is a genuine call for reform or a strategic move to distance himself from a struggling federal government remains to be seen.

One thing is clear: the “open game” of 2027 has officially begun, and the rules are no longer being written solely in the dark rooms of Aso Rock.
