ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a content creator for allegedly spreading a fabricated video claiming that bandits had invaded the nation’s capital.
Addressing residents and journalists on Friday, the Abuja Commissioner of Police (CP), Ahmed Sanusi, confirmed that forensic investigators tracked down the suspect, identified as Pam Joseph, after the video sparked widespread panic across the city.
“Yesterday, a content creator posted a video claiming bandits invaded Abuja,” the CP stated. “When I saw it, our forensic investigators immediately tracked him. He was located and brought in to explain his claims.”
According to police sources, the video featured footage of buildings under construction with superimposed gunshot sounds and alarming captions intended to simulate an ongoing attack. Preliminary investigations suggest the video was a “malicious fabrication” designed to gain social media engagement.
The CP warned that while the Command respects freedom of expression, it will not tolerate the deliberate spread of misinformation that threatens national security or incites public chaos.
“There was no such invasion,” the CP assured. “The suspect is currently in custody and will face charges in court once the investigation is concluded.”
The arrest comes at a time of heightened sensitivity following real security incidents in the outskirts of the FCT, leading authorities to urge residents to verify security alerts through official channels before sharing them online.
