GUSAU — Faced with a looming INEC deadline and a fractured party structure, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal is reportedly finalizing a high-stakes exit strategy from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources close to the Government House in Gusau indicate that the Governor’s final decision now hinges entirely on an imminent Court of Appeal verdict regarding the leadership crisis currently tearing the PDP apart.
The “Appeal Court” Pivot
The Governor’s political future sits at a volatile crossroads. The PDP remains embroiled in a bitter legal tussle over its national and state-level hierarchies, leaving many incumbents feeling exposed. Insiders suggest that Lawal, who has tried to maintain a cautious distance from the warring factions, is now seeking a “stable roof” as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) window for party membership updates begins to close.
“The Governor is a pragmatist,” a senior aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told reporters. “If the Appeal Court ruling goes against the faction he aligns with, or if the PDP crisis deepens to a point of no return, he will have no choice but to seek a more secure platform to protect his mandate and the interests of the Zamfara people.”
The APC Factor
A move to the APC would represent a massive political earthquake in the North-West, potentially placing Lawal in the same camp as his predecessor and bitter political rival, Bello Matawalle.
While the APC leadership in Zamfara has officially maintained a “wait-and-see” posture, high-ranking sources within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja suggest that the doors are “wide open” for any performing governor looking to join the “Renewed Hope” fold.
Survival Amidst Deadlines
The urgency of Lawal’s deliberation is underscored by INEC’s recent review of party guidelines, which sets stricter compliance standards for the 2027 general elections. For Lawal, waiting for a resolution within a paralyzed PDP could leave him politically stranded if the party is unable to field valid candidates or conduct recognized primaries.
If the defection proceeds, Lawal would join a growing list of governors crossing the carpet, further tilting the national balance of power toward the ruling party.
The Road Ahead
As legal teams prepare for the final showdown at the Court of Appeal, political observers in Gusau and Abuja are on high alert. A jump to the APC would not only rewrite the dynamics of Zamfara politics but would likely trigger a wave of secondary defections among state lawmakers and local government chairmen loyal to the Governor.
As of press time, Governor Lawal has not issued a formal statement, with his media team insisting his primary focus remains the “Rescue Mission” for Zamfara State.
