TEL AVIV — Massive explosions rocked the heart of Tel Aviv in the early hours of Friday, March 6, as Iran launched a devastating barrage of ballistic missiles in a massive escalation of the Middle East conflict.
The strikes come as a direct retaliation for the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a high-stakes joint operation earlier this week.
Direct Hits and Firestorms
While Israel’s multi-layered Iron Dome and Arrow defence systems intercepted scores of incoming projectiles, several managed to penetrate the shield, causing widespread panic and destruction.
- Residential Strike:Â A missile scored a direct hit on a high-rise residential building on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, shattering its facade and forcing a midnight evacuation of hundreds.
- City Center Blazes:Â Falling debris from an intercepted rocket sparked a massive fire near the city’s commercial hub. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours as sirens continued to wail across central Israel and as far north as Netanya.
- Emergency Shelters:Â Millions of residents were forced into bomb shelters as the “Red Alert” system stayed active for over 90 minutes.
The Casualty Toll
Initial reports from the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency services indicate a chaotic scene.
- Fatalities: Police have confirmed at least one death resulting from the morning’s offensive.
- Injuries: At least 34 people are currently being treated for injuries ranging from shrapnel wounds to trauma sustained while rushing to shelters.
- Beit Shemesh Massacre: This latest barrage follows a deadlier strike in Beit Shemesh earlier this week that claimed nine lives, bringing the total Israeli death toll to 12 in this latest flare-up.
Tehran Opens ‘Gates of Hell’
Iran’s state broadcaster confirmed the launches, stating the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) fired a “sea of missiles” at “strategic targets in the heart of the Zionist entity.” The new IRGC commander, Mohammad Pakpour, warned that Tehran is prepared to “open the gates of hell” in response to the strikes on its leadership.
Israel Vows Total Retribution
In immediate retaliation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a “massive wave of strikes” targeting regime infrastructure in Tehran early Friday morning. The IDF reported hitting the Supreme National Security Council and the Presidential Office in an effort to decapitate Iranian command-and-control.
As of 6:00 AM Friday, Israel remains under a national state of emergency. Schools have been ordered closed, and additional reservists are being moved to the borders as the region teeters on the brink of total war.
