TEHRAN/WASHINGTON – The Iranian government has reacted with open contempt to President Donald Trump’s claims of “productive” ceasefire negotiations, dismissing the purported talks as a fabrication designed to allow the United States to withdraw from the conflict “without shame.”
The diplomatic clash follows a Truth Social post from the U.S. President on Monday, March 23, 2026, in which he announced a five-day suspension of military strikes against Iranian power plants, citing a breakthrough in resolving hostilities.
The “Five-Day” Pause
President Trump reported that U.S. and Iranian representatives had engaged in “very good and productive conversations” over the weekend. Framing the pause as a diplomatic success, Trump stated he instructed the Department of War to postpone imminent strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure until Friday, March 27.
Tehran’s Scathing Denial
The Iranian response was swift, characterizing the American narrative as a “psychological operation” born of desperation. Foreign Ministry officials stated categorically that no engagement—direct or indirect—has occurred with the United States since the war began on February 28.
Iranian officials mocked the announcement, suggesting it was a face-saving measure for an administration looking for an “off-ramp” after its military ultimatums failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. They further dismissed the claims as “fake news” intended to artificially stabilize global oil markets, which saw an 11% dip following Trump’s post.
A Region on the Brink
Despite the rhetorical pause, the military reality remains grim. While strikes on power plants are deferred for now, U.S. naval operations continue to clash with Iranian assets in the Persian Gulf. With Tehran refusing to even acknowledge the existence of a dialogue, the “five-day” window is increasingly viewed by international observers as a countdown to a renewed and potentially more devastating phase of the war.
