Sokoto – Former Governor of Sokoto State and erstwhile Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a move that sends shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, Tambuwal confirmed his exit in a statement today, March 12, 2026, revealing that he has already moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The Senator stated that his decision followed deep reflection and extensive consultations with his political allies. He noted that he has formally communicated his resignation to his ward chairman.
Explaining his exit from the main opposition party, Tambuwal pointed to the “persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions” within the PDP. He lamented that these issues have eroded the unity and direction necessary for the party to serve as a viable alternative for Nigerians.
“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey,” Tambuwal said, acknowledging the platform it provided him during his tenure as Speaker and Governor. “However, these developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision.”
He further clarified that his move to the ADC, alongside his associates and supporters, is driven by the need for a platform built on integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to national development.
Tambuwal’s defection comes amid a broader realignment of political heavyweights. Reports indicate that other prominent figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, have similarly gravitated toward the ADC as a coalition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Until his formal resignation today, Tambuwal had recently hinted at this shift, citing a “Wike-style” approach to party loyalty by working for the interests of the ADC while the PDP struggled with its internal fractures.
With this move, the ADC gains a massive foothold in the North-West, significantly altering the power dynamics as parties begin to consolidate for the next electoral cycle.
