OSOGBO — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost its final foothold in the Senate from Osun State as the Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi, officially defected to the Accord Party on Monday.
Oyewumi, who represents Osun West, finalized his exit from the PDP by registering at Ward 9 in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area. His move follows months of political tremors in the state, effectively ending the PDP’s presence in the upper chamber for Osun.
The Final Domino Falls
Until this morning, Oyewumi was the lone PDP senator remaining in the state. His colleagues, Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi, had previously jumped ship to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the lawmaker cited “irreconcilable differences” within the PDP as the driving force behind his resignation. He noted that the move was necessary to align with the political direction of the state and better serve his constituents.
“Senator Oyewumi has formally joined the Accord Party to strengthen his commitment to the people. This decision underscores his dedication to responsive leadership and policies that drive meaningful development,” the statement read.
Accord Party Becomes Osun’s New Powerhouse
Oyewumi’s defection is the latest in a massive realignment that has seen the Accord Party transform from a fringe player to the dominant force in Osun politics. The shift began in earnest in December 2025, when Governor Ademola Adeleke shocked the nation by dumping the PDP for Accord.
Since then, the exodus has been relentless:
  • The State Assembly: All 25 PDP members of the Osun State House of Assembly recently joined Accord to reunite with the governor.
  • House of Representatives: Six members of the Green Chamber from Osun also moved to Accord just weeks ago.
  • National Assembly: With Oyewumi’s exit, the PDP has been completely wiped out of the Senate representation for Osun.
A Hero’s Welcome
The Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, led other party stakeholders to Ikire to personally receive the Senator. The registration ceremony was met with fanfare as supporters in Irewole LGA celebrated what they described as the “unification” of Osun West under the Accord umbrella.
With the 2027 general elections drawing closer, the total collapse of the PDP structure in Osun raises serious questions about the opposition’s survival in the South-West.
