ABUJA — The Nigerian political landscape was rocked on Saturday following strong indications that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, is finalised plans to defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).

The move, coming barely months after Obi joined the ADC, signals a major fracture in the opposition’s attempt to form a formidable “Mega Party” to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The Atiku Factor
Insiders close to the former Anambra State Governor revealed that the decision to exit the ADC stems from a deepening rift over the party’s 2027 presidential ticket. Sources allege that the ADC structure has been “hijacked” by loyalists of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, creating a climate that Obi’s supporters believe is designed to shut him out of the primary process.

“Mr. Obi is a man of principle and internal democracy,” a high-ranking member of the Obi-Datti movement told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity. “It has become clear that certain elements within the ADC are more interested in crowning a pre-determined candidate than in a transparent process. The NDC offers a fresh, untainted platform for the rescue mission.”

The Rise of NDC
The National Democratic Coalition (NDC), a relatively quiet political entity, has suddenly become the focal point of intense horse-trading. Analysts suggest that the party is being repurposed as a “Third Force” vehicle, free from the historical baggage and internal squabbles currently plaguing the ADC and the fractured Labour Party.

Obi’s move is seen as a strategic masterstroke to maintain his independent political identity while avoiding a head-on collision with Atiku’s entrenched political machinery within the larger opposition bloc.

“I Am Not Intimidated”
Speaking to supporters in Awka earlier this week, Obi appeared to hint at the coming shake-up, declaring that he remains undeterred by the political ganging up of the ruling class.
“I am not intimidated by anyone’s 30 governors or their deep pockets,” Obi said. “My commitment is to the Nigerian people, and we will find the right platform to deliver the New Nigeria that is possible.”

Reactions from the ADC
In a swift reaction, the leadership of the ADC expressed disappointment over the reports. A spokesperson for the party stated that while they have not received a formal resignation letter, the “constant movement” of political actors does little to help the stability of the opposition.

As of press time, the NDC has scheduled an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, fueling speculation that an official unveiling of Peter Obi as the party’s new leader is imminent.
