WASHINGTON — In a major blow to the Trump administration’s foreign policy, Joseph Kent, the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), resigned on Tuesday. Kent is the most senior official to step down since the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran began on February 28.
A “Manufactured” Conflict
In a resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Kent asserted that he “cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran.” His departure centers on several explosive claims that challenge the White House’s official narrative:
  • Lack of Imminence: Kent explicitly stated that “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation” prior to the strikes. This direct contradiction of the administration’s legal justification raises immediate questions regarding the use of executive power under the War Powers Act.
  • External Pressure: He alleged the conflict was “manufactured” due to pressure from Israel and its “powerful American lobby” rather than American national security interests.
  • Misinformation Campaign: The letter accused high-ranking Israeli officials and sectors of the American media of a “misinformation campaign” designed to deceive the President into a conflict by portraying a “clear path to a swift victory.”
A Veteran’s Personal Toll
Kent, a retired Green Beret and former CIA officer, framed his decision through his own history of service and personal tragedy. A Gold Star husband whose wife, Shannon Kent, was killed in action in 2019, Kent wrote that he could not support sending a new generation to fight in a war that “serves no benefit to the American people.”
Intelligence Community in Turmoil
The resignation has sent shockwaves through the intelligence community. Kent was a close ally of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has maintained a notably low public profile since the initial strikes.
While the White House has yet to issue a formal response, the departure of such a prominent “America First” loyalist highlights a deepening rift within the administration over the strategic and ethical costs of the Iran conflict.
