KANO – In a humiliating turn of events for the Kano State Government, the Kwankwasiyya political movement has delivered a knockout blow to the impeachment case against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo. On Sunday, March 8, 2026, the movement produced “smoking gun” records showing that the ₦1.1 billion expenditure at the heart of the scandal was formally approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf himself.
The Receipts That Changed the Game
The disclosure has left the Governor’s camp red-faced and scrambling. The newly produced documents, dated between April and June 2024, show that a request from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) for water and drug supplies was endorsed by the Deputy Governor and subsequently granted final approval by Governor Yusuf.
This development effectively paints the Governor as the primary authority behind the very transaction his allies in the House of Assembly are now labeling as “gross misconduct.”
A Political Witch Hunt Exposed?
The impeachment proceedings, backed by 38 out of 40 lawmakers, are widely viewed as fallout from the bitter political divorce between the two men. In early 2026, Governor Yusuf made the shock move to defect from the NNPP to the APC, but Gwarzo—a staunch Kwankwaso loyalist—refused to follow suit.
Critics now argue that the Assembly’s charges of financial impropriety were a manufactured attempt to “decapitate” the remaining Kwankwasiyya influence in the administration. With the Governor’s own signature appearing on the disputed funds, the “corruption” narrative has morphed into an embarrassing demonstration of political desperation.
The Fallout in the Assembly
The Kano State House of Assembly, which had given Gwarzo a two-week ultimatum to respond, now faces a major credibility crisis. If the House continues with the impeachment based on transactions the Governor authorized, it risks a constitutional meltdown that could see the entire State Executive Council implicated.
As the “Red Cap” movement prepares for a legal and public showdown, the question remains: Can Governor Yusuf survive the embarrassment of his own paper trail?
