DUTSE — Speculation over a major political realignment in Jigawa State reached fever pitch this week following a series of high-level meetings held by the former Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar.
Despite his public denials of any plan to defect from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the former governor’s recent movements have left many questioning his long-term loyalty to the party.
Cross-Party Consultations
Since returning to the country in February, Badaru has intensified what his aides describe as “consultation visits.” However, the guest list at his recent private sittings in Kano and Jigawa has raised eyebrows, featuring prominent opposition figures:
- The Lamidos: Badaru held private talks with former Governor Sule Lamido and his son, Mustapha Sule Lamido, the 2023 PDP governorship candidate.
- Opposition Stalwarts: He has also engaged with Senator Sabo Nakudu, Senator Ubali Shitu, and Mallam Aminu Ringim, sparking talk of a grand coalition forming ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Official Denials Amid Internal Strife
In statements issued through his media aide, Mati Ali, Badaru dismissed the defection reports as “baseless, speculative, and the product of political mischief.” To reinforce his stance, he recently revalidated his APC membership in his hometown of Babura, urging supporters to remain committed to the party’s national agenda.
Despite these reassurances, political analysts point to a deepening rift between Badaru and his successor, Governor Umar Namadi, as the real driver behind the rumours. Discontent among Badaru’s loyalists in the state has reportedly led some to scout for alternative platforms like the ADC.
Strategic Positioning
While Badaru’s camp maintains these visits are merely “private interactions” aimed at Jigawa’s development, the timing has made observers wary. The former minister, who resigned from the federal cabinet in December 2025 citing health grounds, remains a kingmaker in Northwest politics.
“You don’t meet with the entire opposition leadership just to discuss the weather,” a source within the Jigawa APC noted. “The 2027 race has effectively begun, and it appears Badaru is keeping all his options on the table.”
