DOHA, Qatar – Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a high-precision missile strike against a strategic U.S. early-warning radar system in Qatar early Wednesday, marking a massive escalation in regional hostilities.
The target, a $1.1 billion AN/FPS-132 Block 5 Upgraded Early Warning Radar (UEWR), was reportedly neutralized in a coordinated barrage. The IRGC claimed responsibility for the operation, dubbed “Operation True Promise 4,” characterizing the strike as a direct retaliatory response to recent joint U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iranian soil.
A Precision Strike
Military sources in Doha confirmed that the facility, located in northern Qatar near Al Udeid Air Base, sustained direct hits. While the region is protected by Patriot and THAAD missile defense batteries, early reports suggest that a “saturated” attack—combining swarms of low-flying drones with high-velocity ballistic missiles—managed to overwhelm local defenses.
“The facility has sustained catastrophic damage,” a Qatari defense official told reporters on the condition of anonymity. “While there were no casualties reported on-site, the technical infrastructure is currently non-operational.”
Strategic Blind Spot
The destruction of the AN/FPS-132 is a significant blow to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). With a massive detection range of 5,000 kilometers, the radar served as the “eyes” of the U.S. missile defense architecture in the Middle East, capable of tracking long-range ballistic threats from deep inside Iranian territory.
Defense analysts warn that the loss of this sensor depth creates a critical “blind spot” in the Persian Gulf. “This effectively compresses the reaction timeline for every U.S. base in the region,” said Marcus Vance, a senior fellow at the Institute for Global Security. “Without that early-warning data, the window to intercept incoming missiles shrinks from minutes to seconds.”
The IRGC Declaration
In a televised statement, the IRGC Command declared the mission a success, stating that the “Zionist-American aggressors must understand that their intelligence hubs are within reach.” The statement further warned that any further “miscalculations” by Washington or Tel Aviv would result in the targeting of additional regional command centers.
Washington Weighs Response
The Pentagon has yet to release a full damage assessment, though a brief statement from CENTCOM confirmed “hostile fire directed at military infrastructure in Qatar.”
The strike comes amid a broader wave of Iranian operations across the Gulf, including reported strikes on assets in the UAE and Bahrain. As of Wednesday morning, U.S. forces across the Middle East remain at their highest state of alert, with carrier strike groups repositioning in the Arabian Sea.
