OHATEKWE UKAWU, EBONYI – A 20-year-old man, Damian Oforbuike, has been banished from his community in the Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State after confessing to the brutal machete murder of his mother, Onyemaechi Oforbuike.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has left the village of Ohatekwe Ukawu in shock. According to local sources, Damian attacked his mother with a machete following a bizarre domestic dispute, leading to her immediate death.
The Confession
After being apprehended by local youths, Damian reportedly confessed to the crime in a viral video. He claimed he killed his mother because she refused to perform basic tasks for him and failed to support his sibling’s business.
“I killed her because she refused to bathe me,” the suspect stated during a public interrogation. “She also refused to rent a shop for my brother who learned barbing and needed money to start his business.”
Community Response and Banishment
Following the attack, Damian fled into a nearby forest to evade capture. The councillor representing the area, Hon. Maduabuchi Nweke, mobilised a search party of over 200 youths who combed the bushes for hours before tracking him down.
In line with local custom for “abominable acts,” the community elders and youths paraded the suspect before officially banishing him. He was warned never to set foot in Ohatekwe Ukawu again.
Official Action
The Ebonyi State Police Command was notified of the incident, and Damian Oforbuike has been handed over to law enforcement for formal prosecution. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at a nearby morgue for autopsy.
Community leaders have described the event as a “taboo” that has brought deep mourning and a sense of unease to the agrarian settlement.
