ABUJA — Investigative journalist David Hundeyin has delivered a stinging rebuke to followers calling for his return to lead a political movement, describing Nigeria as a “trash country” and dismissively labeling individual heroism as “completely useless.”
In a viral post on Sunday, Hundeyin reflected on his experiences during the 2023 election cycle, stating he has no intention of “lighting himself on fire” for a public that only celebrates dead symbols. He argued that Nigeria does not need another individual hero to end up in jail or as a “posthumous Burna Boy tribute song,” but rather a “full-spectrum nationwide rebellion” so violent it would alter West African history.
Hundeyin, who is currently in exile, made it clear that any future return to the capital would not be as a solitary leader, but as part of a mass movement of thousands marching down Shehu Shagari Way. He maintained that until Nigerians are ready for such a collective and “vicious” shift, individual sacrifice is a waste of time that “cannot change the price of garri in the market.”
The comments have sparked a fierce debate online, with some praising his “brutal honesty” while others condemned the call for a “bloody” uprising as dangerous rhetoric.
