KUKAWA, Borno State — A heavy cloud of grief hangs over the Nigerian military today following a brutal, coordinated assault by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents on a frontline base in Kukawa. The overnight raid, which turned the Lake Chad Basin into a battlefield, has left scores dead, including a highly respected Commanding Officer.
The attack kicked off in the dead of night, around 12:30 a.m., as terrorists swarmed the 101 Battalion from multiple flanks. Eyewitnesses described a hellish scene of tracer rounds and heavy explosions that lit up the Kukawa skyline for hours as soldiers fought a desperate, close-quarters battle to hold their ground.
A Hero Falls
The most stinging blow of the night was the death of Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, the base’s Commanding Officer. Known for his tactical grit, Farouq was reportedly hit during the height of the firefight. Despite frantic efforts to evacuate him to Maiduguri for emergency surgery, he succumbed to his injuries en route.
His death is particularly gut-wrenching for the local community; just weeks ago, the Colonel was hailed as a hero on social media for successfully leading his men to crush a similar insurgent push.
Base Ransacked
Before reinforcements could turn the tide, the insurgents managed to briefly overrun the facility. The aftermath reveals a grim scene of destruction:
- Ammunition Looted:Â Terrorists reportedly made off with a significant cache of weapons and military hardware.
- Hardware Torched:Â Several military gun trucks and operational vehicles were reduced to charred skeletons.
- Casualties: While the military is yet to release a final body count, sources on the ground say the loss of life among the rank and file is significant, with scores of terrorists also neutralized in the crossfire.
Coordinated Chaos
The Kukawa massacre appears to have been part of a wider, synchronised night of terror. Similar strikes were reported in Goniri, Dalwa, and Mainok, as well as a harbor location deep inside the Sambisa Forest. While the Air Force and ground reinforcements managed to push back the attackers in Goniri, the breach at Kukawa stands as one of the deadliest setbacks for the counter-insurgency effort in recent months.
As of Monday morning, the Army has launched a massive search-and-rescue operation across the Lake Chad fringes to hunt down the fleeing militants and recover the remains of the fallen.
