KATSINA — A high-stakes military operation in the rugged forests of Katsina State has left 45 bandits dead, including several notorious kingpins, following a savage encounter that also claimed the lives of a Nigerian Army Captain and two soldiers.
The clash, which occurred late Thursday, saw troops of Operation Hadarin Daji engage a massive concentration of criminals in a gunfight that witnesses described as an “explosion of fire and steel.”
The Price of Valor
While the military recorded a decisive tactical victory, the mood at the frontline was somber as news broke of the fallen officers. The Captain, described by peers as a “fearless tactician,” died leading a charge against a fortified bandit position. Two soldiers also lost their lives while providing cover fire for their advancing unit.
“Our boys fought like lions,” a senior military source told our correspondent. “We took out 45 of the terrorists on the spot, but losing a Captain and two gallant men is a heavy price to pay for the peace of our people. They died with their boots on, defending the motherland.”
Decapitating the Hydra
Military intelligence confirmed that at least three top sub-commanders, who had long terrorised the Katsina-Zamfara border axis, were among those neutralised. The elimination of these figures is expected to throw the bandit groups into a leadership crisis and disrupt their kidnap-for-ransom syndicates.
The aftermath of the battle painted a grizzly picture of the intensity of the fight. Dozens of motorcycles were reduced to twisted metal, while a cache of AK-47 rifles, GPMGs, and thousands of rounds of ammunition were recovered from the blood-stained forest floor.
State in Mourning
The Katsina State Government, in a late-night statement, hailed the “superhuman bravery” of the troops while mourning the fallen.
“The sacrifice of these three heroes represents the ultimate debt we owe to those who keep us safe,” the statement read. “While we celebrate the crushing of these 45 criminals, our hearts bleed for the families of the Captain and his men.”
Mop-up Operations
As of Saturday morning, the Air Component of the operation has intensified its surveillance over the Ruggu forest, hunting for wounded bandits who escaped the initial onslaught. Ground reinforcements have also moved in to secure the general area and prevent any reprisal attacks on nearby farming communities.
The bodies of the fallen soldiers have been moved to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, with full military honours expected during their final rites.
