BENIN CITY — Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised a notorious kidnap kingpin and rescued four abducted victims during a high-stakes clearance operation in the Warake Forest of Owan East Local Government Area, Edo State.
The successful mission, conducted on Wednesday, March 4, also led to the apprehension of another suspect believed to be a key informant for the syndicate.
Gun Battle in the Forest
Acting on intelligence regarding a transit camp where victims were being held for ransom, the troops launched a tactical raid on the forest hideout. Upon sighting the soldiers, the criminals opened fire, leading to a fierce gun battle.
In the engagement, the leader of the gang was killed, while other members of the syndicate fled into the thick vegetation, abandoning their camp.
Victims Rescued
The four victims were successfully secured by the troops. Although they had been held for several days, they were reported to be in stable condition. They were subsequently moved to a medical facility for assessment before being reunited with their families.
During a sweep of the scene, the military recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and various communication devices used by the kidnappers.
Informant Apprehended
A suspect was caught in the vicinity of the camp during the follow-up search. Preliminary investigations suggest the individual provided logistics and movement intelligence to the gang. He remains in custody for further interrogation.
Security Crackdown
This operation is part of a broader offensive to clear criminal elements from forest reserves in Edo North. Authorities have increased patrols along the Warake-Auchi axis to deter further abductions and ensure the safety of commuters.
