ABUJA — A fierce storm is brewing in the Federal Capital Territory as the leadership of the Igbo Community Association (ICA FCT) has hit back at Senator Onyekachi Onwaebonyi over his claims that the South East is “firmly aligned” with President Bola Tinubu for 2027.
In a blistering rebuttal, the ICA FCT declared that the Senator is “totally out of touch” with the reality on the ground in the South East. The association’s leadership argued that Onwaebonyi has been blinded by the “goodies” of the National Assembly and has effectively traded the struggles of his people for political patronage in Abuja.
“The Senator is not qualified to speak for the Igbo nation,” a spokesperson for the association stated. “He can hardly speak for his own constituency in Ebonyi North, let alone the entire South East. He has lost touch with the pulse of the people who are currently grappling with record inflation and insecurity.”
The Abuja-based Igbos maintained that the Senator’s endorsement is a “personal hustle” that does not reflect the sentiments of the grassroots. They challenged the lawmaker to visit the local markets and streets of the South East to see if his “alignment” story holds water outside the corridors of power.
This high-decibel rejection highlights a deepening rift between the South East political elite in the APC and the diaspora and grassroots populations who remain skeptical of the current administration’s impact on the region.
