ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police have officially arraigned Dr. John Abebe, an Abuja-based fertility specialist and pastor with the Living Faith Church, over a shocking scandal involving the alleged “unlawful sale” of a couple’s embryos.
Appearing before an FCT High Court in Jabi on Wednesday, Abebe faces a three-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, fraud, and the unauthorized disclosure of confidential medical records.
According to the charge sheet, the medical director is accused of selling off embryos belonging to a couple who sought IVF services at his clinic. He is also alleged to have breached professional ethics by making their private medical history public without consent.
While the “Doctor-Pastor” has pleaded not guilty to the charges, the news has sent ripples through both the medical and religious communities in Abuja. Legal counsel for the prosecution argued that the act violates the National Health Act and fundamental rights to privacy.
The court has granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with one surety in like sum, while the case has been adjourned for further hearing.
