UMUAHIA — The Abia State Government has issued a formal clarification regarding the arrest of an injured soldier, Amoke Simon, maintaining that the state’s involvement with the serviceman was strictly based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.
The statement follows public interest in the soldier’s detention by military authorities shortly after he was received by Governor Alex Otti. Simon, who had sustained significant injuries in the line of duty, reportedly sought an audience with the Governor to discuss his welfare and medical challenges.
According to the Commissioner for Information, the state government provided initial support and a platform for the soldier to air his grievances out of respect for his service to the nation. However, the government emphasized that it does not interfere with the internal disciplinary or administrative procedures of the Nigerian Army.
“The Governor’s gesture was purely a matter of empathy for a wounded countryman,” a government spokesperson stated. “We recognize the sacrifice of our security personnel and felt it necessary to provide immediate comfort. The subsequent actions taken by the military are entirely within their constitutional jurisdiction.”
While the specific reasons for the soldier’s arrest remain a matter of internal military protocol, sources suggest it may be linked to unauthorized public appeals or breaches of regimental discipline.
The Abia State Government reiterated its commitment to supporting security agencies while maintaining a clear boundary between executive compassion and military governance.
