JIBIA — A year-long period of relative calm in Katsina State has been violently broken following a bloody encounter between local vigilantes and “repentant” bandits that left at least 18 people dead in Jibia Local Government Area.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday after a series of clashes hit the Falale and Kadobe communities. According to official reports, the violence began when a local vigilante patrol intercepted and neutralised three suspected repentant bandits in Falale village.
In a swift and brutal response, armed gangs launched a reprisal attack on the surrounding communities, killing an additional 15 residents and members of the vigilante group. The incident has sparked a fresh wave of concern regarding the efficacy of state-brokered peace pacts with criminal elements.
The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, verified the death toll and assured the public that a joint security team—comprising the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Katsina Community Watch Corps—has been deployed to stabilise the axis.
The killings have drawn sharp criticism from public observers, including former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who warned that such reports reinforce fears that many bandits claim repentance only to “evade justice” while maintaining their criminal networks.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the breach of the existing peace accord, while security remains tightened across the Jibia-border area to prevent further escalations.
