Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is holding a consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja today, but the Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is noticeably absent.

Instead, the faction of the PDP led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, which has the backing of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is representing the party at the meeting. The meeting, chaired by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, is discussing preparations for the February 21 FCT area council polls, voter register revalidation, and strengthening internal party democracy ahead of the 2027 general election ¹.

The absence of the Turaki-led NWC is seen as a snub, given the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP. The party has been polarized into two factions, with the Wike-backed faction claiming to be the legitimate leadership.

The INEC meeting is also attended by leaders of other major political parties, including the Labour Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC)
