KAIAMA — Distressing new details have emerged from the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where a massive assault by suspected terrorists has left the nation in shock. A community leader, speaking from a displacement camp on Monday, February 9, 2026, revealed the barbaric nature of the attack, stating that many victims were herded into a church building before it was set ablaze.
“We lost count of the number of Christians locked up and burnt inside the church,” the traumatized leader, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told reporters. “They didn’t just shoot; they wanted us to suffer. They locked the doors from the outside while the people were praying and lit the fire.”
The Massacre Totals: 170 and Counting
The death toll from the Tuesday evening raid has now been officially adjusted to 170 persons, confirming it as the single deadliest terrorist attack in the North-Central this year.
- The Five-Month Warning: It has been revealed that the community provided the authorities with a warning letter sent by the terrorists five months ago. Despite an initial military deployment, the troops were reportedly withdrawn weeks before the massacre occurred.
- Targeted Killings: Survivors allege that the attackers, identified by many as Fulani ethnic militia, specifically targeted Christian households and institutions, echoing the market day slaughter in Abande, Benue State where 17 people were recently butchered.
‘Nigeria is a Killing Field’ — Atiku
The Kwara massacre has triggered a firestorm of political condemnation. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Nigeria as having “descended into a killing field” under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.
While Atiku’s critics have reminded him of his silence during the 2022 lynching of Deborah Samuel, his latest critique joins a chorus of voices—including Professor Usman Yusuf—who argue that the government is spending billions on “Tucano Jets” and “Guns” while failing to protect the lives of the 133 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty.
The International and Judicial Fallout
The news of Christians being burnt alive has reached Washington D.C., where US advocates like Judd Saul and broadcaster Tony Perkins have accused the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, of engaging in a “propaganda cover-up” during her recent visit.
Domestically, the arraignment of former AGF Abubakar Malami for allegedly shielding terrorism financiers is being watched closely by the Kwara survivors. “If Malami protected those who fund these men, then he has the blood of Woro on his hands,” a community spokesperson stated.
Security ‘Operation Savannah Shield’
In response to the outcry, the Federal Government has announced the launch of ‘Operation Savannah Shield’ to flush out terrorists from the forest reserves of Kwara and Niger states. However, with petrol prices nearing ₦1,000 and the national debt at ₦152 trillion, many fear that the state’s resources are too depleted to sustain a long-term campaign.
