LONDON / ABUJA — A viral critique from a Nigerian woman residing in the United Kingdom has sparked a heated public debate regarding the political affiliations of billionaire businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana.
The woman’s remarks, which have gained significant traction on social media, challenge the mogul’s public endorsement of the President Bola Tinubu administration while his wife and children reside in the UK.
The Allegations of Hypocrisy
In the widely circulated video, the critic pointedly questioned why a prominent supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would choose to educate his children and settle his family in a foreign country if the “Renewed Hope” agenda were truly transforming Nigeria.
“Obi Cubana is busy supporting Tinubu and APC, meanwhile his wife is on a student visa here in the UK with her children,” the woman stated. “If Nigeria is working under Tinubu like Obi Cubana claims, why is his wife in another man’s country that is working, hustling for papers and his children schooling in the UK? What happened to the schools in Nigeria under APC?”
Academic Pursuits vs. Permanent Residency
The critique follows recent public milestones for the Iyiegbu family. In May 2025, Obi Cubana and his five sons were seen celebrating as his wife, Ebele Iyiegbu, graduated with a Master’s degree in International Business Management from the University of Surrey.
However, some commentators, including social media analyst Chukwudi Iwuchukwu, have alleged that the family’s presence in the UK is a long-term relocation rather than a temporary academic stay. They argue that promoting the “City Boy” movement at home while securing a future abroad creates a disconnect with the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
The “City Boy” Controversy
Obi Cubana’s political involvement has intensified recently. On February 4, 2026, reports emerged that the billionaire had taken a formal role as a regional director for the Southeast within the City Boy Movement, an organization led by the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu.
While the businessman has previously advised Nigerians to follow their own conscience and act in their best interests, the UK woman’s viral video highlights a growing trend of “accountability culture” among the Nigerian diaspora.
As of February 13, 2026, Obi Cubana has not officially responded to the specific “hustling for papers” jibe, though his supporters maintain that seeking a global education for one’s family is a personal choice that does not negate one’s political convictions.
