President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Abuja yesterday evening, concluding a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding economic, security, and strategic cooperation between Nigeria and Türkiye.
Tinubu’s aircraft landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at approximately 8:55 p.m., where he was received by senior government officials.
During his visit, President Tinubu held bilateral talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, focusing on trade, investment, security, energy, education, and defence cooperation. The two leaders agreed to intensify cooperation in these areas, with a renewed push to achieve a $5 billion trade volume target.
Nine agreements were signed, covering diaspora policy, defence cooperation, halal quality infrastructure, higher education, media and communication, education, diplomatic training, and social services cooperation. President Erdogan pledged Türkiye’s support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, particularly in the Sahel region, and offered closer cooperation in military training and intelligence sharing.
However, the visit was overshadowed by concerns over Tinubu’s health and composure during official engagements. His awkward steps and visible discomfort during a ceremonial walk alongside President Erdogan sparked speculation about his well-being, with some describing his performance as “socially awkward” and “unprepared for the symbolic weight of his office”. The presidency attributed the incident to an “uneven surface or a misstep”, but critics argue that it highlights deeper concerns about his capacity to govern effectively.
