ABUJA — In a major security overhaul, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Olukayode Egbetokun as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing him with the newly promoted Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Olatunji Disu.
The decision, which sent shockwaves through the security architecture of the country on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in the administration’s approach to internal security.
The New Sheriff in Town
AIG Olatunji Disu, widely regarded as a highly decorated and tech-savvy officer, takes the helm of the Nigeria Police Force following a stellar track record.
- Recent Command:Â Before this appointment, Disu served as the AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos.
- Public Profile: He gained national prominence as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos and later as the head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he was credited with modernizing tactical operations.
End of the Egbetokun Era
The removal of Olukayode Egbetokun comes after a period of tenure extension granted by the President. Born in September 1964, Egbetokun was originally slated for retirement in late 2024.
While the Presidency has yet to issue an official statement outlining the specific reasons for the sudden replacement, sources suggest the move is part of a broader strategy to inject “new energy and tactical innovation” into the force amid mounting security challenges and the recent allegations of a coup conspiracy.
Strategic Timing
The leadership change coincides with a flurry of high-profile security developments, including the ongoing investigation into the ₦835 million coup-plotting fund trail. Disu’s background in intelligence and criminal investigation is expected to be pivotal in navigating these sensitive cases.
Official handover ceremonies at the Force Headquarters are expected to commence shortly following the formal announcement from the Villa.
