AWKA — Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo on Thursday received the South-East leadership of the City Boy Movement at the Government House, Awka, sparking intense debate over the political trajectory of Anambra State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The delegation was led by billionaire businessman Chief Dr. Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana. During the courtesy visit at the Light House, the group formally introduced its objectives, which they described as a dual focus on supporting Anambra’s development initiatives and mobilizing grassroots support for the upcoming electoral cycle.
Addressing the governor, Chief Iyiegbu emphasized the movement’s commitment to collaborating with regional stakeholders. “The City Boy Movement is ready to advance development and contribute meaningfully to the political process in the South-East,” he stated.
In a move that has since drawn significant attention, Governor Soludo donned the branded “City Boy” cap, a symbol closely associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC). While Soludo is a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), he expressed appreciation for the group’s enthusiasm, stressing the need for unity in driving sustainable development.

The meeting has invited sharp criticism from sections of the Nigerian public and political analysts. Critics on social media and local radio outlets questioned the Governor’s optics, with some accusing him of “political double-dealing.”
“It is confusing to see an APGA governor openly romancing a movement that is the engine room of a rival party,” said Chidi Omeje, a political commentator based in Enugu. “This creates a crisis of identity for APGA supporters in Anambra.”
Others expressed concern over the involvement of business moguls in grassroots mobilization so far ahead of the 2027 polls, suggesting that the focus should remain on governance rather than early electioneering.
The high-powered delegation included former Nigerian Ambassador to Burundi, HE Amb. Elijah Onyeagba, PhD; Hon. Ikenna Iyiegbu; Abig Nwankwo; and the Anambra State Director of the movement, Sir Nonso Ozoemena.
