Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not be part of any agreement to hold the party down for another party to win power at the centre in 2027. Makinde made this statement while revealing that FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had offered to hold the PDP down for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Makinde expressed shock at Wike’s offer, stating, “I was in a meeting with President Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, and others when Wike volunteered to hold the PDP for Tinubu against 2027, and I was in shock. Wike can support the president in 2027, but I will not”.
The governor emphasized the need for a multi-party system, saying, “Some of us want to ensure that democracy survives in Nigeria, we don’t drift into a one-party state. And we want to ensure that PDP survives. He should also allow us to do our own thing”.
Makinde’s statement comes amid a crisis within the PDP, with some members accusing Wike of trying to undermine the party. The Oyo State PDP chairman, Dayo Ogungbenro, has vowed that the party will not be intimidated, saying, “Federal might will fail in Oyo State in 2027”.
The development has sparked intense reactions from PDP stakeholders, with some calling for Wike’s expulsion from the party. Meanwhile, the APC has remained silent on the matter, but analysts believe the party is likely to capitalize on the PDP’s internal strife.
The rife between Makinde and Wike is seen as a significant development in Nigerian politics, with implications for the 2027 elections. As the PDP navigates this crisis, one thing is clear: the party’s survival is at stake.
